Legal remedies
You can contact the Ombudsman for Equality if you suspect that you have been discriminated against due to gender, gender identity or gender expression. The Ombudsman for Equality can provide general advice and instructions on the contents of the Equality Act, start investigating suspected discrimination and issue a statement on a discrimination case. The Ombudsman for Equality may also promote reconciliation between the parties. The Ombudsman for Equality may also refer cases concerning discrimination prohibited under the Equality Act to the National Non-Discrimination and Equality Tribunal. You can find more information on how the Ombudsman for Equality handles discrimination matters here Contacting the Ombudsman for Equality.
These pages contain information on other tools than contacting the Ombudsman for Equality for when a person suspects discrimination.
General oversight of legality
You can turn to the general law enforcement authorities – the Parliamentary Ombudsman or the Chancellor of Justice – if you suspect that an authority or civil servant or another person in public office or a public organisation have acted incorrectly or have not fulfilled their duties.
Discrimination not based on gender
The Non-discrimination Act (1325/2014) prohibits discrimination on the basis of age, origin, nationality, language, religion, belief, opinion, political activity, trade union activity, family relationships, state of health, disability, sexual orientation, or other personal characteristics.
Compliance with the Non-Discrimination Act is supervised in working life by occupational safety and health authorities and in other cases by the Non-Discrimination Ombudsman. More information on the Non-Discrimination Act and the authorities supervising it can be found here Discrimination not based on gender.
