Annual Report 2015 of the Ombudsman for Equality released

The Annual Report 2015 of the Ombudsman for Equality describes the Ombudsman’s work: monitoring prohibitions of discrimination, promotion of gender equality and societal advocacy.

As in previous years, most enquiries related to employment concerned discrimination due to pregnancy and family leave. In advocacy, key themes included amendments to the Equality Act, equality work in comprehensive schools and prevention of sexual harassment in schools.

Year 2015 marked a major change: the Ombudsman for Equality was transferred from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health to operate as an independent agency in the administrative branch of the Ministry of Justice. The change of administrative branch and operation as an independent agency in addition to the Ombudsman’s basic activities significantly increased the workload.

In particular, the Annual Report focuses on cases where the Ombudsman for Equality was contacted by persons who suspected discrimination and cases that were resolved by the Ombudsman.
